Close To Heaven - Frescoes and altarpieces of Amorbach Abbey Church

On entering the former abbey church, visitors are first of all overwhelmed by the Baroque beauty of the space and the wealth of paintings on the ceilings and altars. 

The idea for this book originated in the desire to understand the pictures better and to gain deeper insight into the meaning of these wonderful works of art. 

The book aims to help the many visitors to the now princely abbey church to feel closer to that era, to show them the beauty of Matthäus Günther’s and Oswald Onghers's wall paintings and altarpieces in close-up and to explain the deep veneration of the saints that is part of the Benedictine tradition. 

The former abbey church is a unique work of art in the service of faith. Heaven is so close to us inside the church, as the monks of former times saw it - and as it can once again be a living hope and expectation even for us today.
